Cyclone 'Hamoon' strikes Bangladesh coast, wreaks havoc

Cyclone 'Hamoon' ravages coastal Bangladesh, leaving destruction in its wake

Cyclonic Storm 'Hamoon' has initiated its landfall over the coastal regions of Bangladesh and is projected to weaken into a deep depression within the next six hours, as stated by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

As of 25th October at 05:30 IST, the Cyclonic Storm 'Hamoon' was located approximately 40 km east-southeast of Chittagong, Bangladesh. It was accompanied by wind speeds ranging from 80 to 90 kmph, gusting up to 100 kmph, the IMD reported.

Weakening and movement

The cyclonic storm is expected to move northeastward and further weaken into a deep depression within the next six hours, and subsequently, into a depression over the following six hours.

In anticipation of the cyclonic storm's impact, a 'storm warning cage number 2' was placed at Pamban Port in Rameswaram to caution fishermen about the approaching Severe Cyclonic Storm 'Hamoon' over the Bay of Bengal.

The Odisha administration had issued an alert for all Urban Local Bodies (ULB) in view of the cyclonic storm's formation in the Bay of Bengal.

Additionally, light to moderate rainfall is anticipated in various parts of the region, including Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, and east Arunachal Pradesh.

Safety measures for fishermen

Fishermen have been advised to refrain from venturing into the Northeast Bay of Bengal, the coasts of Bangladesh and north Myanmar until October 25, as well as the adjacent areas of northwest Bay of Bengal and Eastcentral Bay of Bengal until Wednesday afternoon. These precautions are in line with safety recommendations issued by the India Meteorological Department.

The Indian authorities are closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary measures to ensure the safety of residents and to mitigate the potential impacts of Cyclone 'Hamoon.'
